To the GE boys of 2011 who have not figured out what a commentary is by now and for those who are still producing chunks and chunks of facts from the internet (ARGH!!!)
Dear boys, first and foremost please take note that the purpose of this post is to tell you, in detail, how to analyse, make connections and score in your portfolio !! So read carefully!
Before you start writing:
Firstly, think about the artifact that you have chosen. List the impact of the artifact that you chose. (This becomes your key points) Ask yourself how it has affected your thinking, attitude or feelings. Write them down.
Next, try to gather more information about the issue (by referring to blog posts or the forum page of the newspaper) so that you can get the opportunity to read the other reader’s point of view and hopefully find likeminded individuals;) At this juncture, you would probably get more ideas on what to write. This should formulate your key points for the commentary.
To start on the commentary:
Begin by summarizing the event/main story in your own words. Then, introduce the key points that you wish you highlight or argue on.
The main body of your text should start with you discussing on the first key point (mentioned above) with regards to the artifact. Your points must be convincing and you are to include your personal response. Ensure that you support your points with examples. Next, attempt to draw similarities from another case study ( preferably from another country ) that covers the same subject. In this way you will show that you have made appropriate connections to your issue. It is important that you demonstrate logic when you present your examples though, or it will defeat the purpose of writing in the first place!! You should also be able to defend your points with confidence and maintain a consistent point of view throughout your commentary.
Do not use simplistic words like “bad” and “good” when you make a judgment on the issue. Ensure that your language is clear, varied and precise.
To end your commentary, include a persuasive summary of your key points. You may share your thoughts on how this issue has affected your attitude and thinking.
Thats all folks! ;)

Dear boys, check this out - Photos of the History play (photos from Jordan)
The locals, waiting in line to "pay their respects" or at least they wish they could.. to the Japanese soldiers.
Here comes the Japanese soldiers ! Argh!! Hmm... They don't seem as nasty as they are reputed to be....

Not for the lily-livered... Parental guidance needed!! Matthew is such a natural actor!

IMPORTANT: Questions for your portfolio reflection
Dear boys,
Some of you requested that I put up the statements from the reflection sheet so that you can merely copy them and type out the answers in the final submission. I have decided to frame them into questions to help you in the thinking process ( and of course help you to score well;) so here they are:
Did this piece of work (commentary) demonstrate that I have gained new knowledge, understanding and/or skills? In what way?
Did it show my awareness of current affairs and community issues? How?
Did it allow me to play an active role as a member of my class/school/community? How?
Did it show my experience with group work/activities/projects?How?
Did it make me look at things differently? How?
How did I apply my previous learning in knowledge, understanding and/or skills?
What new insights did I gain about myself from working on this piece of work?
What are some of my areas of strengths?
What are some of my areas of weaknesses?
What do I find challenging?
